A pair of early morning collisions involving multiple big rigs left one injured and stopped traffic for more than eight hours Monday.

The collision was first reported at 2:20 a.m. according to California Highway Patrol officials.

“Eleven big rigs were involved,” said CHP spokesman John Lutz. “In the latter crash, the secondary collision, there was one party who was extricated and brought to Henry Mayo, with minor to moderate injuries.”

The first collision involved four vehicles, including a dump truck; and the second collision involved seven more trucks.

Traffic lanes remained open after the crash, but CHP officers were expected to continue cleaning up the scene until around 5 or 6 p.m.

“They’ve removed the trucks but they’re still cleaning up,” said a CHP official.

“Obviously, there are some serious wrinkles we’ll have to deal with, as far as statements and evidence and all that will have to be worked through,” Lutz said.
